My guess is that this number came from that same NPS ranger explaining the rationale behind the Underground RR stamp; or else it was on one of the interpretative signs at the site.
Considering how I would tend to use the word "apparently" in a context like this, my guess is that I'm impressed that they were able to come up with at least 60 credible instances of runaways. I think their number came from fugitive slave announcements placed in the newspapers, if memory serves me correctly.

What was your source for the part that "Apparently" about 60 slaves tried to escape from Hampton at one time or another? Not having been to any of the other historic sites that you mentioned, I could not vouch for Hampton's preeminence. The staff is constantly making changes in the room furnishings for historic authenticity, including reacquisition of objects which once were at Hampton. There is a recent book out on Hampton, "Images of America: Hampton National Historic Site", by Ann Milkovich McKee.

I usually can't take credit for any "good" photo. I found it on some Boston area website. I need to start properly crediting photos I take from other people's websites.

I can think of a few in the vicinity that have an admission fee. Too bad I'm not still out west and able to take advantage of the $10-$20 admission fees for Arches, Yellowstone, etc.

Mom's version: When the crowd had thinned out and I still didn't connect with Mike I didn't feel comfortable staying in the Park alone. I thought it would be better to join up with the crowd walking in the direction of our hotel, which I did. I expected Mike to be happy to see that I safely found my way back. Alas, that was not his reaction. Moral of the story: Even if you plan on staying together in a crowded situation, always take your cell phones along to avoid situations like this. How easy it would have been to find each other at the end, if we had our cell phones charged and with us (even if I tend to easily lose mine.)

Paul,
I totally took the picture in question from the photo gallery on the Prince William Forest Park website.
At http://www.nps.gov/prwi/ you will see along the left column a link to "photos & multimedia". From there, I chose the "Photo Gallery" and that beautiful picture of the bridge is in the "Scenic Shots" album. It has no photo credit that I am aware of.
The Prince William Forest Park site has a "contact us" link with postal, phone and email contact information.

Our company produces DVD-based educational programs on various science topics for students in grades 4-9. You can see our work at www.freshscience.com. We're in the midst of producing a unit on Ecology. As such, we would like to include an image from your website. The image will help illustrate a section covering geographic features.

This leads to my inquiry with you. I am writing to ask permission to include the image on our educational DVD. The image is found here: http://muffinquest.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/20070817161136.jpg.

If you are willing to let us include the image, we should be able to download it.

We would, of course, be happy to credit you on the DVD and in the printed teacher guide.

I hope I have given you sufficient information on which to fulfill our request. If not, please do not hesitate to e-mail me or give me a call at 770-521-8980.

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Paul Heigl

What?! What?! Bite yer tongue--there's no treachery on OUR part. But I can certainly agree with the requirement that we post more. And I hereby promise to do my part! We'll be in touch about winning--with a rules clarification, you may just prove lucky.
